Are You Looking for the “Perfect Candidate”?

Posted

If you have a hard time filling open positions because no one is good enough for your company, it’s time to re-examine your hiring strategy. Striving to find the perfect candidate is a very natural and understandable objective, but this behavior is holding you back. This laser vision mentality is causing you to miss a slew of other great candidates who might turn out to be the best hire you’ve ever made, if you give them a chance.

Focus on These Three Factors Instead of Perfection

It goes without saying that you should never hire anyone without the basic skills needed to do the job, but it’s time to broaden your horizons and redefine your definition of “perfect.” Instead of refusing to consider anyone who doesn’t check all your boxes, place your attention on these three factors.

  1. Sometimes the candidate with the most impressive skills doesn’t turn out to be the best employee, because they’re so focused on upward mobility that they’ll take a job anywhere just to pad their resume. Conversely, when you hire someone who is truly passionate about both your company and the work they’re doing, they will give their all each and every day — and this level of enthusiasm is infectious.
  2. The candidates every company wants to hire know they’re in high demand, so they’re always looking over their shoulder for something better. Forget them and focus your efforts on choosing someone whose career history might not be quite as impressive, but clearly has the foundation for a very bright future. People don’t forget when you take a chance on them, and they reward you with years of hard work and dedication.
  3. You can train new hires to have all the desired and nice-to-have skills on your list, but there’s not much you can do if someone has a bad personality. Concentrate on finding a candidate who seamlessly blends in with the rest of your team, because few things are more detrimental to a work environment than an employee who can’t get along with anyone else.
