How to Know if a Candidate is a Good Fit

Posted

As a manager, hiring decisions are some of the toughest choices you’ll have to make. It can be very challenging to gauge a candidate’s reliability after meeting them just once or twice, so you have to ask pointed questions that are truly telling. Learn as much as possible about each person before making your decision, so you can be confident that you won’t regret your choice.

Ask These 4 Questions to Determine a Candidate’s Fit

  1. Why do you want this job?

This question should be very easy to answer for anyone who truly wants the job. If the candidate gives a heartfelt answer detailing exactly why they’re excited at the possibility of being chosen for the position, they’re likely a reliable choice. Conversely, if they have trouble explaining the reason they want to work for you, they’re probably not taking it very seriously.

  1. What is your ideal work environment?

It’s important to make sure your company can provide the candidate’s ideal working conditions, as happy employees are much more reliable. For example, someone who prefers to work in a high energy, collaborative environment probably won’t last very long in a quiet office where most projects are completed on a solo basis.

  1. Where do you see yourself in five years?

You want to hire someone you can count on to be with your company for years to come. Find out where candidates want to be in five years to see if they’re hoping to grow their career with your organization. Don’t waste your time on someone who only sees the job as a temporary way to make ends meet.

  1. How do you feel when someone misses a deadline?

There’s nothing more frustrating than having a team member who considers deadlines arbitrary and subsequently holds everyone else up. If the person conveys a huge appreciation for deadlines and proudly notes they never miss one, they’re likely someone you can count on to submit all assignments on time.
