Your Job Search in 2019

Posted

Have you decided that 2019 is the year you’re finally going to take the next step in your career? If so, congratulations! As a seasoned professional, you can certainly use your many years of experience and the skills you’ve developed along the way to your advantage. However, if you’ve been out of the job search for a few years, it’s important to catch up so you don’t get left behind.

3 Adjustments to Make to Your Job Search Strategy

If you want to be competitive in today’s job market, you’re going to have to be a little savvy. These days, successful candidates manage their personal brand through both their resume and their online presence. Put the following three tips into action to maximize your visibility:

  1. If You’re Not Already — Get On Social Media! It’s completely fine if you don’t want to use social media to share personal information, but avoiding it altogether is no longer an option. Companies post jobs and search for candidates on sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. If you don’t have a presence on these popular social media sites, you may be inadvertently keeping yourself from ever knowing about these jobs.
  1. Create a Robust Online Presence: Okay, now that you’re on social media, it’s time to start making a name for yourself! Employers won’t find you unless you’re taking the initiative to write industry-relevant blog posts, sharing updates on new trends and providing other pertinent content that helps you build an audience. Follow industry leaders and companies you’re interested in working for to stay in the know.
  1. Optimize Your Resume: It’s no longer enough to simply submit a perfectly polished resume — you now need to customize it to fit each position by including the right keywords. Carefully review each job description to look for frequently used words and phrases. Any that you find are likely the keywords the organization is using to scan resumes to identify candidates to interview. Incorporate them into your resume as often as you can, without making it sound unnatural, to increase your odds of being selected for the next round.
