Preparing for a New Employee’s First Day on the Job

Posted

After wrapping up a long and tedious hiring process, it’s always a relief to have finally found the perfect candidate. However, your work is far from finished. You’re now tasked with living up to your new hire’s expectations, so they choose to continue their employment with you.

Approximately one-third of U.S. employees have left a new job within six months, according to a February 2014 study conducted by HR technology company, BambooHR. The company surveyed 1,000 professionals, finding that 16-to-17 percent had left a job between their first week and third month of employment. This calculates to the average company losing one in six new hires each month for the first three months.

3 Tips to Prepare for a New Hire’s First Day

Follow these three tips to give your new team members a warm welcome:

  • Have Their Workstation Ready. There’s no better way to make a new employee feel unwelcome than not having their workstation set up. Make sure they have a space to call their own and the equipment needed to do their job from day one. Request access to any necessary software programs or other systems that take time to be installed far in advance, to ensure plenty of time for IT to get it done.
  • Plan a Team Lunch. Gather your whole group together on the person’s first day and head out to lunch together. This is a great way to make your new team member feel accepted and appreciated. Plus, it’s much more comfortable to make introductions and get acquainted in a relaxed setting away from the office. Be sure to put the date on everyone’s calendars, so no one forgets.
  • Create a 30-60-90-Day Plan. Make sure you’re on the same page with your new employee by making a 30-60-90 day plan detailing your expectations for them. When you’re just starting a job, it can be frustrating to know whether or not your progress is on track. This allows the person to know exactly where they stand, so there’s no confusion. It also helps them to be more independent, which will certainly be appreciated.
