Does Your Culture Promote Employee Wellness?

Posted

Take a minute to assess your company culture. Does it promote employee wellness or negate it? If you’re leaning more to the latter, it’s time to make a change for the better.

Healthy employees come into the office ready to do their best work each day. These people are energetic and focused on the task at hand — rather than feeling lethargic and distracted because they aren’t feeling their best. You want your employees to be in good health, so take the time to help them take better care of themselves.

5 Ways to Create a Healthy Company Culture

Use the following five tips to build a company culture that fosters happy and healthy employees:

  1. Hold Complimentary Wellness Screenings: Make it easy for your employees to take control of their well-being by holding annual health screenings at your office. Many people may not make it to the doctor for a yearly physical on their own, but would be grateful for the opportunity to have an onsite assessment. Plus, your insurance provider may even offer discounts on premiums to those willing to participate, who meet certain health criteria.
  2. Stock the Break Room with Healthy Snacks: If your break room has a vending machine, it’s probably filled with candy, chips, soda and other unhealthy snacks. Swap this high calorie junk food for healthy foods designed to boost energy and actually satisfy hunger. Search for a vending machine partner offering healthy options or opt to stock the kitchen with healthy snacks on your own.
  3. Provide Generous Health Insurance Benefits: It’s important for your employees to go to the doctor when they’re sick and to get routine wellness exams. However, people are often hesitant to seek medical attention when they have less-than-ideal healthcare coverage. Provide your team with excellent medical benefits, so they can always get the care they need.
  4. Encourage Employees to Exercise: The American Heart Association recommends that people get 30 minutes of moderate cardio exercise five days per week. Inspire your team to get moving by offering onsite fitness classes or discounted memberships to a local gym.
  5. Offer Paid Sick Days: Do you offer paid sick days? If not, you’re inadvertently encouraging sick employees to come to work and spread germs throughout your office. Let people stay home without losing pay when they’re sick, so they can get well faster and avoid passing their illness on to other team members.
